Country Snapshot: Mali and The Hamfemdou Djenne

Photo of two women working in a field.

Fifty women of Djenne village are running a flourishing horticulture market, supported by a USAID micro-finance project. In 2002, USAID constructed the irrigation system, built a fence, supplied seeds and a motor pump for the 2.5 hectare plot.

The women grow and market high-value agricultural commodities and are now in a position to support their families, pay school fees, and buy clothes and medicines. They have moved from virtually no income to more than US$1,000 and upwards.
