Country Snapshot: Mali and Democratic Governance

Photo of a group of woman and children at a community meeting.

USAID/Mali is working to increase women’s influence over community decision-making by providing their associations with tools and skills to take an active public role, and training women candidates in campaign strategies for local elections.

Through its partners, International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) and National Democratic Institute (NDI), USAID/Mali’s Democratic Governance Team seeks to support improved electoral processes and increase women's participation in the 2004 local elections.

The overall purpose of these programs is to support the Government of Mali as it carries out local elections. Its pilot project, Women in Governance seeks to increase women’s influence in the decision-making at the local level in order to strengthen decentralization in Mali.
