Country Snapshot: Guinea and Local Alliances for Girls & Education

Photo of a little girl holding a sign which reads, Bonjour.

USAID promotes girls’ education activities in virtually every corner of Guinea through support of Local Alliances for Girls’ Education, 140 Parent/Teacher Associations (PTAs), and 225 Literacy Centers. These civil society groups have become strong advocates for girls’ education at the community level.

In Hamdallaye, Labé, for example, a USAID-sponsored NGO called Club Des Amis du Monde has been working with the local PTA, in which women who two years ago did not understand the utility of the PTA now take an active part. Fatoumata Kanté, PTA member and mother, says, "It’s important for girls to stay in school to finish their studies.” Kanté says the PTA has found ways to help girls with their homework, and has lessened girls’ work at home to ensure that they attend classes.

A girls’ scholarship program is also being initiated in Guinea to encourage girls who were forced to drop out to return to school, as well as community grants and special incentives for girls to complete their primary school cycle.
