Country Snapshot: Guinea and Empowering Women Entrepreneurs

Photo of two women sitting together.

USAID/Guinea supports micro-credit programs for poverty alleviation and empowering women entrepreneurs. In keeping with the Natural Resource Management Strategic Objective to alleviate poverty and take pressure off the natural resource base, the rural community savings and loan program called the “C-3” is helping women to generate supplemental income for food, education, housing, and other basic needs.

Mrs. Damayé Camara, a C-3 client in the rural Kindia area, used a $70 loan to purchase inputs necessary to produce peanuts on a small piece of land near her home. The profits allowed her to pay back the loan, and invest $100 in working capital to initiate a new off-farm business activity--selling metal kitchen utensils to other women at the local weekly market. She has since increased her working capital to $300, has been able to save more than $175 in six months, and is making a better contribution to family income.
