Country Snapshot: Guinea and Credit Intermediary Service

Photo of a group of women dancing and clapping their hands.

USAID sponsors the Credit Intermediary Service (CIS) program, connecting 25 reliable, democratically run, rural economic cooperatives with formal banking institutions. The program encourages transparency and trust, and allows reliable rural clients to manage a loan for the first time. The program emphasizes good governance and transparency by: insisting on democratic practices in the management of rural co-ops; good business planning using their analysis of their own financial option; and increasing literacy in business management. The members of Yassiriba Rural Economic Cooperative of Madinagbé – a women’s cooperative – has successfully managed their second loan from a local bank. By leveraging $125 to take out a $500 loan to buy and commercialize palm oil, they were able to make $432 in net profits.
