Country Snapshot: Benin and Equity and Quality in Primary Education (EQUIPE) Program

Photo of a girl at a chalkboard.

USAID programs within communities raise awareness of the importance of girls’ education, using a person-to-person approach. The EQUIPE program includes support for local committee members to work one-on-one with sixth-year students, helping girls earn their primary school certificate and intervening with family members to prevent daughters from being overburdened with domestic chores.

In Ganhoumé, central Benin, for example, Ayékoffè was the first girl to earn her primary school certificate in the school’s twenty year history.
