The Gender and Economic Growth Training materials constitute the most comprehensive treatment of gender and
economic growth developed by USAID.
The materials enhance development practitioners' and policy makers' knowledge,
skills, and confidence in identifying gender challenges, asking gender-related questions, finding the necessary
data and assistance to answer these questions, and developing appropriate program interventions to meet
gender-related targets. Trainees also develop Gender Action Plans that outline tangible goals and actions
for integrating gender into USAID strategies, plans and projects.
Training Topics
The training materials cover a range of
topics including:
- How Gender Issues Influence Economic Growth/Trade-Related Activities
- Gender-Sensitive Program Monitoring Objectives and Indicators
- Gender Integration Opportunities
- Obtaining Useful Gender Reports-Gender Analyses and Consultant Scopes of Work
- Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for Gender-Integrated Programming
- Small Grants Considerations
Locally Adapted and Tailored to the Needs of Specific Countries and Missions

Acknowledging the complex nature of gender, the materials are meant to be adapted and tailored specifically to
support gender integration efforts in an individual Mission's economic growth, trade and investment, agriculture
and environment activities. In this way, trainees learn to relate gender concepts directly to particular
political, economic, and social experiences of men and women in their projects.
To date, the materials have been adapted and training has been delivered to USAID economic growth teams in
Bangladesh, Peru, and Kenya.
