On September 16, EGAT's Office of Women in Development hosted an all day Anti-Trafficking Symposium entitled “USAID Anti-Trafficking Programs: Moving Forward With a Decade of Experience” at the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C. UNICEF Ambassador and Actress, Lucy Liu, who has been an active proponent of anti-trafficking issues, delivered the luncheon remarks.
More than 250 individuals representing various aspects of the U.S. government, NGO, and private sector community in combating human trafficking worldwide attended.
Other notable speakers included Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Luis CdeBaca, Ms. Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Chairman of Carlson Companies, Ms. Cecilia Oebanda, President of Visayan Forum Foundation and Laurie Holden, actress and spokesperson for the Somaly Mam Foundation. They joined USAID and Department of State professionals, congressional staffers, and representatives of past and current USAID anti-trafficking activities in a range of discussions centered on key themes in the fight against human trafficking, such as root causes, law enforcement and legislation, care standards, shelters and reintegration services, raising awareness, and changing behavior.
