The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence runs from International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) and ends on International Human Rights Day (December 10). This year's theme is "Commit ? Act ? Demand: We CAN End Violence Against Women!"
The 16 Days Campaign, started in 1991, has been used as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.
Eliminating violence against women has long been a goal of the US. The US Government recognizes that equal participation of women in the political, economic and social spheres of society is key to sustainable development. Unless women fully experience human rights, to which freedom from violence is inextricably bound, progress toward development will continue to fall short.
USAID is recognizing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence by hosting a series of panel discussions and presentations to help raise awareness about gender-based violence and to highlight how USAID is responding to this global challenge.
