“The Role of Civil Society in Peace-Building and Conflict Mitigation,” InterAction’s “Forum 2004,” CMM director Elisabeth Kvitashvil

May 2004

The Director of CMM, Elisabeth Kvitashvili, spoke about civil society’s role in peace-building and conflict mitigation at InterAction’s “Forum 2004.” She emphasized that civil society organizations play an important role in this process by providing resources, legitimacy and forums for constructive dialogue, while also creating bridges across lines of ethnic division. However, she advised against relying too heavily on civil society groups in peace-building and conflict mitigation activities, urging donors and implementing partners to balance support for such groups with efforts aimed at strengthening state institutions responsible for managing tension and violence, and at addressing some of the underlying causes of conflict.
