Resort tourism is a key source of income in Jamaica.

USAID-supported tourism activities in Jamaica exemplify an integrated approach to achieving sustainable tourism project success.

The three projects in USAID/Jamaica’s environment portfolio—the Environmental Audits for Sustainable Tourism (EAST) project, the Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP), and the Ridge to Reef Watershed Project (R2RW)—have combined their efforts to provide an overall environmental management platform in attaining destination status.

In one activity on Jamaica’s north coast, the particularly impoverished Portland Parish is seeking international certification as an environmentally responsible destination. This effort is being implemented through a local, public/private affiliation that represents all segments of the community, with full support from the Jamaican Government and the assistance of USAID.
