Gardez to Khost National Highway (GK Highway)
DATES: May 2007 - October 2014
PARTNERS: International Relief and Development, Inc. (IRD)
The GK Highway, as envisioned, will be a 101-kilometer high-speed, all-weather national highway providing the Khost province and surrounding provinces with access to the rest of Afghanistan. The highway will feature an international link to western Pakistan and connect the provincial capitals of Paktia and Khost to Kabul. In particular, it will connect Khost (roughly 150 kilometers south of Kabul and 25 kilometers from the Pakistan border) to Gardez, creating a transit route to the Ring Road that connects Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat. The road is expected to positively impact on trade, business activity, and access to essential services by the regional population.
