Since 1832, the United States and Thailand have maintained a strong relationship. Through its assistance programs, USAID has built a solid foundation of partnership in development with the Royal Thai Government.

Despite Thailand’s remarkable economic progress and advancement as a middle-income country, persistent and critical development challenges still remain. Trafficking in persons for forced prostitution and labor, and the relatively high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, are some of the country’s main development challenges. And as in many Southeast Asian countries, climate change remains a threat—elevating the danger of natural and man-made disasters, droughts, extreme weather patterns and sea level rise, and putting economic growth and people’s lives at risk.

USAID’s assistance in Thailand supports the responsible use of natural resources; reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS; preventing human and wildlife trafficking; promoting peace and civic reconciliation; and helping civil society groups work more closely with the government.
