SpO1 – Energy and Infrastructure photo of power station

USAID’s Special Objective works to help Nigeria expand the supply of electrical power to its citizens; an important dividend of democracy, while improving the management of key elements of infrastructure such as energy and transport. Program objectives include:

  • increasing the availability of energy by privatizing and restructuring the energy sector and expanding renewable alternatives;
  • implementing international civil aviation standards;
  • enhancing the capacity of Nigeria's ports. The U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) are helping to implement these programs.
Key results: USAID support for restructuring the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) has helped the utility to reorganize selected finance and accounts departments, setting the stage for a more comprehensive reorganization of NEPA in the near future. USAID assistance through the U.S. DOT for aviation safety and security has resulted in the lifting of a six-year ban on U.S. bound flights originating from Nigeria
