Finalists in SL@B Grand Challenge for Development descend on DevelopmentXChange event in D.C.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada and the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) will host a DevelopmentXChange event for “Saving Lives at Birth”: A Grand Challenge for Development July 31.

Yesterday, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) released a report on "Twenty Years of U.S. Economic Assistance to Eastern Europe and Eurasia," at a discussion hosted by the Brookings Institution. The program included a panel discussion with U.S. Department of State Special Coordinator for Middle East Transitions Ambassador William Taylor, Booz Allen Hamilton Senior Vice President Donald L. Pressley, and former USAID Mission Director Craig Buck. Brookings Senior Fellow George Ingram moderated the session.

Yesterday, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced 16 new health research projects in 10 countries, which will focus on addressing some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.  Through the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) Health competitive grants program, USAID will directly support scientists from developing countries working on research projects with NIH funded scientists. The projects are the first to be funded through an initiative designed to foster collaborative global research in critical areas of health and disease research.

USAID’s Largest Gender Program Will Build Upon Afghan Progress From The Past Decade

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a five-year program targeting the education, promotion, and training of a new generation of Afghan women, aged 18-30.  Named “Promote,” the program’s goal is to increase women’s contributions to Afghanistan’s development by strengthening women’s rights groups, boosting female participation in the economy, increasing the number of women in decision making positions within the Afghan government, and helping women gain business and management skills.

William Hammink was sworn in today as the U.S. Agency for International Development Mission Director to Afghanistan, USAID’s largest country program in the world.  Hammink will direct projects to support sustainable economic growth, good governance, and support for maintaining critical development gains in health and education.

The Tropical Forest Alliance 2020, a whole-of-government initiative led by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State, welcomed three global civil society groups as new partners in this public-private partnership to address tropical deforestation. At the same time, USAID announced a major new investment in a separate initiative that will support TFA 2020 goals by helping to monitor tropical deforestation.
