WSU to Lead Development of Heat-Tolerant Cereals

Washington State University will lead a new effort to develop wheat varieties that are better at tolerating the high temperatures found in most of the world’s growing regions—temperatures that are likely to increase with global warming. The research will be supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Directorate of Wheat Research (DWR), and is part of the U.S. government’s global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new LGBT Global Development Partnership, a public-private partnership between the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, the Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute (GLVI), the Williams Institute, and Olivia Companies, which further promotes foreign assistance to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality in emerging markets and developing countries.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Western Union have launched the Libya Diaspora Marketplace (LDM). The LDM will award up to four winning businesses with matching grants of between $25,000 and $50,000 with accompanying technical assistance.

Today, Gary C. Juste was sworn in as the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Mission Director for Mali. In this capacity he will oversee a complex program that provides lifesaving assistance in health and food security, as well as elections support in anticipation of polls later this year.

The United States Government, in coordination with the Governments of the United Kingdom, Norway and the European Union, will host a South Sudan Economic Partners Forum in Washington on April 16, 2013, to discuss the economic and fiscal challenges facing South Sudan and how the Government of the Republic of South Sudan, together with partner nations and international financial institutions, can best address them.

The USAID-funded Nepal Economic, Agriculture, and Trade Activity (NEAT) is partnering with the Nepal Ministry of Agriculture Development (MOAD) to design and disseminate agricultural training materials nationwide. The materials—263,000 pieces covering 13 crops and 3 types of livestock—include durable handouts and flipcharts aimed at increasing the quantity and quality of agricultural production. The materials are oriented to illiterate and semi-literate populations, using a combination of photos and written descriptions in Nepali to clearly depict and explain critical agriculture practices. The materials will be distributed to Department of Agriculture Training Centres, District Agriculture Development Officers (DADOs), and extension service centers throughout Nepal.

Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Donald Steinberg and Bangladesh’s Minister of Environment and Forests Dr. Hasan Mahmud jointly announced the launch of the new USAID Climate-Resilient Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CREL) program.  U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan Mozena and USAID Bangladesh Mission Director, Richard Greene also attended the launch.

Higher Education Partnerships Will Promote Gender Equality and Female Empowerment in Critical Development Sectors

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Higher Education for Development (HED) announced its new Women’s Leadership Program. Five universities in the United States have been selected to partner with higher education institutions in Armenia, Paraguay, Rwanda and South Sudan to promote gender equality and women’s leadership.

The U.S. Agency for International Development will hold its annual public meeting of the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid (ACVFA) at The Ronald Regan Building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. Administrator Shah will make opening remarks, followed by a moderated panel discussions among USAID leadership and ACVFA members. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Kiawah Trust of U.K., and Dasra, India’s leading strategic philanthropy foundation, launched a new $14 million partnership to address the healthcare needs of adolescent girls, mothers, newborns, and children in India.  The announcement was made at the Dasra Philanthropy Week 2013 in Mumbai.

This initiative will provide emerging information and communications technology (ICT) skills training and increase the number of job-ready graduates for the country’s ICT sector.
