Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) swore in Jonathan Addleton as the new Mission Director to the Central Asian Republics Regional Mission based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The strategic partnership between the United States and the five Central Asian Republics – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - is helping to improve conditions for the millions of citizens in this region who live in poverty. Through the Mission in Almaty, the United States and the Central Asian Republics are working to advance democracy, human rights, and governance; foster economic growth and trade; expand cooperation within Central Asia and South Asia in the area of energy sustainability; and improve health in the region. Ambassador Addleton will manage over $125 million in U.S. assistance to Central Asia.
Ambassador Addleton is a career Senior Foreign Service Officer with the rank of Career Minister. Prior to this assignment, he was detailed twice to the Department of State, serving first as U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia (2009-2012) and then as Senior Civilian Representative to southern Afghanistan based in Kandahar (2012-2013). He has also served as USAID Representative to the European Union; USAID Mission Director to Pakistan, Cambodia, and Mongolia; and a USAID Program Officer in Jordan, South Africa, and Yemen.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service in March 1984, Ambassador Addleton worked briefly at the World Bank, Macon Telegraph and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Ambassador Addleton, who received a PhD from Tufts University and a bachelor’s degree from the Northwestern University, joined the Foreign Service in 1984. He is married to Fiona Addleton, and they have three college-age children.
