On July 22, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will release its report, “Twenty Years of U.S. Economic Assistance to Eastern Europe and Eurasia” at an event hosted by the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. The program will also include a discussion on U.S. economic assistance to post-communist Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union countries.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti S.A (BRANA), a Haitian brewery owned by Heineken, have signed a memorandum of understanding  (MOU) to improve the livelihoods of Haitian farmers by sourcing locally grown sorghum.

USAID’s Largest Gender Program Will Build Upon Afghan Progress From The Past Decade

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a five-year program targeting the education, promotion, and training of a new generation of Afghan women, aged 18-30.  Named “Promote,” the program’s goal is to increase women’s contributions to Afghanistan’s development by strengthening women’s rights groups, boosting female participation in the economy, increasing the number of women in decision making positions within the Afghan government, and helping women gain business and management skills.

William Hammink was sworn in today as the U.S. Agency for International Development Mission Director to Afghanistan, USAID’s largest country program in the world.  Hammink will direct projects to support sustainable economic growth, good governance, and support for maintaining critical development gains in health and education.

The Tropical Forest Alliance 2020, a whole-of-government initiative led by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of State, welcomed three global civil society groups as new partners in this public-private partnership to address tropical deforestation. At the same time, USAID announced a major new investment in a separate initiative that will support TFA 2020 goals by helping to monitor tropical deforestation.

Today, USAID and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) announced the Scaling Seeds and Technologies Partnership, a $47 million, three-year partnership intended to accelerate smallholder farmer access to transformative agricultural technologies. The Partnership will work in four countries within the G8’s New Alliance for Food Security -- Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, and Tanzania -- where it will help governments strengthen their seed sectors and promote the commercialization, distribution and adoption of improved seeds and other key technologies.

On Tuesday, June 25, Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will travel to Dubai for the "U.S.-Pakistan Business Opportunities Conference" where he will make an announcement about the Pakistan Private Investment Initiative, a USAID sponsored program designed to attract private sector investment to Pakistan.  He will also meet with business leaders and government officials.
