A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Nepal at midday local time on April 25, causing fatalities, injuries, and significant structural damage. The Government of Nepal (GoN) has declared a state of emergency and requested international assistance. USAID/OFDA has activated a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and is providing an initial $1 million to address critical humanitarian needs.

USAID announces $126 million to help rebuild health care systems in EVD-affected West African countries. The Monrovia Medical Unit (MMU) in Liberia plans to close on April 30. EVD response teams visit more than 29,000 households in Guinea’s Forécariah Prefecture during pilot stay-at-home period. The week of April 6–12 reflects the lowest total number of prefectures and districts in EVD-affected countries to report a confirmed EVD case since the end of May 2014.
The Electoral Reform and Civic Advocacy (AERCA) project supports an Afghan-led electoral reform process that addresses inadequacies that were highlighted in past Afghan elections. The current electoral system does not yet allow for full representation of Afghan citizens and limits opportunity for the growth of effective political opposition. In response, AERCA engages with reform-minded civil society advocates to support improvements in the electoral system and facilitates public opinion research on electoral reform and democracy issues.
All contacts related to the last confirmed EVD case in Liberia graduate from observation. The Government of Guinea (GoG) launches its first stay-at-home campaign in Forécariah Prefecture. Seven of Sierra Leone’s 14 districts have exceeded 42 days with no new confirmed EVD cases. Treatment capacity now surpasses demand as a result of declining EVD cases in Guinea and Sierra Leone.
The USAID Economic Stabilization Program (ESP) creates jobs and improves economic opportunities in Bajaur, Mohmand and South Waziristan Agencies of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). USAIDESP will develop farmers' and livestock holders' skills and resources to improve the quality and quantity of their produce.
The Municipal Services Program (MSP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh seeks sustained improvement in municipal service delivery to better address basic needs and build the capacity of provincial governments to manage key municipal services such as the drinking water supply, sanitation systems (including drainage and sewerage), and the solid waste management (SWM) systems within three administrative divisions (Peshawar, Malakand and Dera Ismail Khan) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and selected towns of Sindh.
USAID is partnering with the Government of Pakistan to rehabilitate the Mangla hydroelectric power station located in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir. The main objective of the project is to add 90 MW to the national grid through the refurbishment and upgradation of the power plant which will improve the reliability and availability of this power plant for the next 2025 years.
The Women's Hostel Project supports the construction of a new women's dormitory at Forman Christian College in Lahore. The new women's hostel provides 384 additional beds, thus permitting the university to accept more women students, especially at the graduate level.
