The Food Aid Reform proposal in the FY 2014 President’s Budget will reach more people in need by expanding the flexibility in our food assistance delivery while reducing average per person costs, addressing clear inefficiencies in P.L. 480 Title II (Title II), while allowing for the majority of emergency food aid to still be procured from the United States. This fact sheet details the total resources available for food aid under the reforms and how the reforms will allow USAID to reach more people and reduce the average cost per beneficiary. In addition, this fact sheet clarifies the overall International Disaster Assistance (IDA) request and explains how it is allocated between emergency food and non-food emergency needs.

Yes Youth Can Central is a youth empowerment program that is being implemented in Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Muranga counties as part of a national effort to avoid a repeat of the devastating violence that followed the 2007 elections in Kenya. Mobilized by angry politicians, youth were both the perpetrators and the victims of widespread violence that undermined the nation-state and peaceful ethnic co-existence.

The Kenya Primary Reading and Math Initiative is a research-based activity to improve the English and Kiswahili language and mathematics skills of Kenyan children by the end of Grade Two by 2015. Ensuring that children have the reading and mathematics skills they need to succeed in secondary school and the workforce is an important shared goal of the Government of Kenya and USAID. The program is working jointly with the Ministry of Education to evaluate successful pilot interventions in 500 primary schools and prepare to bring them to scale.

Phase two of Peace Initiative Kenya focuses on improving national and county-level gender-based violence service delivery systems and policy implementation. The activity strengthens county engagement in preventing and responding to gender-based violence and increases access and utilization of gender-based violence services through community outreach and awareness raising efforts.
