What is Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth?

Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth aims to increase economic resilience among pastoral communities in Kenya’s arid counties by strengthening the livestock value chain. The activity will foster more sustainable management of natural resources, address issues related to governance of grazing land, water and other natural resources help mitigate conflicts, and allow for diversification of the livelihoods of pastoralists. Interventions will target actors at all levels of the value chain—from livestock keepers to middlemen, traders, transporters and buyers— in order to improve incomes and stimulate growth.

What does the Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth do?

The activity aims to strengthen the links between pastoralists and the buyers of livestock and livestock products. It will help herders increase livestock productivity through improved breeds and will expand the adoption of existing and new livestock services. Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth will support both men and women in the pursuit of livestock-related economic opportunities.

Investments in targeted community-managed infrastructure will help to eliminate market constraints.  The introduction of private-sector driven innovations will reduce risk, and encourage pastoralist communities to adopt new behaviors and new ways of doing business.


What is the expected impact of Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth?

The activity expects to ensure that women, men, and youth are all benefiting from development and are equitably empowered. Women in particular will have increased access to financial capital, better access to information and skill development, and expanded leadership opportunities.
Leaders in the targeted communities will be more engaged in how to effectively respond to new market opportunities and absorb the impact of future shocks and stresses.


What key challenges does Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Accelerated Growth face?

Insecurity in Kenya’s arid areas, especially in areas such as Isiolo, hinders the implementation of some activities.

Cultural factors may also pose a challenge to the implementation of the project. For pastoralists in northern Kenya, livestock is the main source of livelihood. They may therefore be reluctant to sell their livestock without good reasons. The activity will look for creative ways to address this constraint.
