A STRONG CIVIL SOCIETY
Namibian Parliament Logo showing the Parliament building USAID/Namibia has entered into a new US $ 717,000 cooperative agreement and partnership with a prominent Namibian NGO, the Namibian Institute of Democracy (NID) for the purpose of strengthening emerging civil society organizations and their public policy advocacy skills and capabilities. NID will provide training, technical assistance, and subgrant support to Namibian advocacy organizations. This is an important complementary component of Namibia`s Strategic Objective 4, directed at assisting the Namibian Parliament with its development efforts and its accountability to all Namibian citizens.
ECO-BUSINESS AND CHEETAH CONSERVATION IN NAMIBIA
A drawing of a Cheetah As part of a U.S. Congressional mandate for environmental protection this year, USAID and a Namibian NGO, The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), have begun discussions on a program that will help protect cheetah habitat in Namibia.
The Namibian Mission and the regional legal advisor from USAID`s Regional Center for Southern Africa (RCSA) recently visited CCF`s headquarters near Otjiwarongo to discuss a preliminary CCF concept paper for USAID funding. As currently anvisioned, $ 1 million in USAID funding will help CCF start an innovative eco-business project to reduce bush encroachment and generate a new source of income for community residents and small farmers.
EDUCATION SECTOR ADDRESSES HIV/AIDS CRISIS
At a local summit in Namibia, Facilitated with USAID technical input and funds (with particular thanks to the African Bureau`s Office of Sustainable Development), the Ministries of Higher Education and Basic Education, have drafted a strategic plan to respond effectively to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its ramifications on the education sector.
Attended by the Minister of Basic Education John Mutrwa, deputy Minister of Higher Education Buddy Wentworth, and their senior staff members, the five day workshop in Swakopmund was heralded as a key step in the effort to ensure a coordinated, energized, response to the HIV/AIDS impact on the education system in Namibia.
US AMBASSADOR TAPPED FOR KEY TRADE POST
It was recently announced that US Ambassador to Namibia, Jeffrey Bader, was selected by the Bush Administration to serve as Assistant US Trade Representative. Ambassador Bader will depart Namibia in the Near future to oversee US trade policy and agreements for China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mongolia.
USAID/NAMIBIA OFFICER MOVES ON TO MIDDLE EAST
Veteran USAID Officer and chief of Namibian`s natural resources and democracy office, Gary Cohen, has departed the Mission after five years of service, and is taking up a new assignment in the UASID/Egypt Mission as a infrastructure project manager. Best wishes Gary!
