Rivi Rivi Bridge Project


Partners: Central East Africa Railway Company Ltd, Government of Malawi, and the UK Department for International Development (DfID)

USAID Contribution: $47,246

The project was completed in 2003 and accomplished three objectives: (1) improved reliability and efficiency of the Nacala corridor to enable Malawi Railways to capture maximum share of overseas traffic; (2) turned Malawi Railways into a commercially viable entity through restructuring and eventual privatization; and (3) formulated a transport policy that fosters a sound environment for commercially viable transport businesses. Improved reliability and efficiency of the Nacala corridor to evacuate commercial goods to the port of Mozambique and earn foreign exchange for Malawi.
