About the Education Program
While access to education remains a problem, the greatest development challenge in Mali, and the greatest impediment to achieving universal primary enrollment, is the poor quality of education—including an inadequate infrastructure, poor pedagogic materials, lack of trained teachers, and formal education’s irrelevancy to the lives of boys and girls and their different learning needs. USAID’s objective is to support the Government of Mali’s ten-year reform plan (PRODEC) to improve the quality of basic education.
USAID’s program to improve the quality of basic education includes technical assistance and training to: provide pre-service and in-service teacher training for teachers in Grades 1-6; develop an improved national curriculum; mobilize communities to manage and advocate more effectively for public, community, and Islamic schools; and train decision-makers at decentralized levels of the Ministry of Education to link resource and budgetary allocations to desired results.
What's New in this Strategy?
- Focus on Quality not Access
- Coheres to the education sector wide approach
- Greater emphasis on decentralized structures
- Includes all geographic regions including the North
- Specific learning needs of boys and girls addressed in all areas of intervention
- Teacher Training based at the school-level
- Wide use of radio education
- Assistance is targeted to public schools, medersas, and religious schools
