Mission Overview

Out of the Shadows

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) reopened its Mission in Afghanistan in January 2002. Its mission is to promote security and accelerate the political and economic reconstruction of the country focusing on six key areas: agriculture, health care, education, strengthened democracy, economic governance and infrastructure.

Working with the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, USAID works to pave roads; revitalize the agricultural sector; build clinics; train doctors, nurses and mid-wives; and build schools, train teachers, and provide accelerated learning programs for girls. USAID also supports programs that enhance the government's credibility and provide it with the tools and assistance to govern effectively.
