| Mission Director, Henderson M. Patrick

Since September 2005, Henderson M. Patrick has served as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director in Madagascar. In this position, he directs over a $166 million project portfolio which is improving the health of the Malagasy people, protecting Madagascar's unique natural environment, promoting a transparent, re-sponsive, and democratic government, and increasing community eco-nomic development. A major theme of U.S. assistance in Madagascar is integrating environment, economic development, health, and governance programs to reduce the widespread poverty found in the country.
Mr. Patrick is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service Class of Minister Counselor. He was Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Rwanda from 2004 to 2005 and the Director of USAID/Rwanda from 2002 to 2004. Mr. Patrick also held supervisory program officer positions in Haiti and South Africa and served as the Deputy Director of USAID/Guinea.
In 1996, he became Director of Recruitment in the USAID's Management Bureau. From 1991 to 1995, he was Division Chief in the Asia and Near East Bureau, responsible for development programs in the Middle East, and played a key role in launching the West Bank and Gaza assistance program. From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Patrick served as a Private Sector Devel-opment Officer in Rwanda. He has also served as a Regional Project Development Officer in Abidjan from 1985 to 1988, responsible for program design, development and evaluation in thirteen west and central African countries. Mr. Patrick started his career in USAID in 1983 as a Project Development Officer in the Africa Bureau.
Before joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Patrick worked as a Commercial Lending Officer with the U.S. Export-Import Bank. He was also a World Bank Consultant assigned to the Kenya Government.
Mr. Patrick speaks French, Lao and Swahili. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974.
Mr. Patrick graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 and earned an MBA from George Washington University in 1978. He is married to Sue Ford Patrick.
