After negotiations between Royal Ahold, the world's largest food retailer and owner of Giant Food, and USAID, an agreement was reached in October 2001 under which Royal Ahold would strengthen the marketing of Ghana's horticultural exports.
The USAID-funded project helped Royal Ahold to develop and shape a strategy for entering the Ghanaian market to support export led development that will stimulate economic growth in the country. This was seen as a transfer of Ahold's know-how to improve production, supply chain management for the horticultural products that are competitive, and provide domestic and export market outlets for the products.
The project helped Ahold to understand the economic environment and introduced Ahold to various producers in the fruits and vegetable market as well as other exporters and public agencies. The project is implemented on the basis of a network of local partners and development of public-private partnerships.
Royal Ahold has brought its vast experience to assist Ghanaian horticultural exporters in adapting their production and marketing procedures to meet the quality standards of developed countries. They have also agreed to purchase any and all local production that meets their standards. An additional benefit is that Royal Ahold's marketing experience will benefit USAID contractors and grantees by helping them refine their own technical assistance practices. Royal Ahold plans to commit approximately $3 million in support over three years.
