First Ladies Enjoy Presentations of USAID Education Program
Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States and Madame Chantal de Souza Yayi, First Lady of Benin, attended a presentation of USAID supported education programs in Benin. The program featured five representatives from the USAID-supported Mothers' Associations of Benin and beneficiaries from the Ambassador's Girls Scholarship Program. The Mothers' Association described how the association has empowered them to help their children, especially girls, to stay in school.
In response to their moving testimonials, Mrs. Bush commended their courage and encouraged them to continue their efforts to help all children go to school. Five primary school girls then briefly spoke about the impact of the scholarships they receive. They described their happiness to be able to go to school and their hopes for a bright future. Both groups sang songs of welcome and appreciation to the First Ladies and presented them with gifts of traditional handicrafts.
At its conclusion, the First Ladies showed their appreciation of the program by kissing each of the girls.
IFESH Supports Regional Teacher Training
On Thursday, April 24, 2008, IFESH/Benin gave the Ministry of Preschool and Primary Education (MEMP) three beautiful buildings worth $50,000 each, to be used as regional teacher training centers. The training centers were constructed by IFESH during the second phase of its USAID-funded Primary Education Teacher Training Project.
The Minister of MEMP and most of her Directors presided at the donation ceremony, impressed and excited by the quality and design of the buildings. Located in Adjara in the South, Dassa-Zoumé in central Benin and Djougou in the North, the three buildings each have two large training rooms, office space, toilettes and four or more hectares of land. These buildings will serve as training and library centers for teachers of the region, starting within the framework of the community teachers' distance learning project initiated by the Government of Benin and implemented by the National Institute for Training and Research in Education (INFRE in French).
