USAID Response to Foulpointe Fire

PRESS RELEASE
August 20, 2009

August 20, 2009 - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will mobilize plastic sheeting and construction equipment for temporary housing to shelter the estimated 2,800 people left homeless following a devastating fire in Foulpointe this week. Some 50 rolls of plastic sheeting, valued at $20, 000, to shelter the 555 households reportedly destroyed, and necessary food rations and household items will be distributed through USAID partner, CARE International with additional support from Catholic Relief Services (CRS).

The US government responds to crises through USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), which recently committed over $1 million to relief and recovery from cyclones Jade and Fanele in addition to ongoing support for drought stricken southern Madagascar.
