All of USAID’s programs integrate support for accountability and transparency and promote good governance, respect for human rights and political competition.
Our work to strengthen civil society organizations and independent media helps citizens and organizations engage their government. These efforts improve citizens’ knowledge of their governing institutions, increase interaction between elected officials and citizens, and make development efforts transparent and accountable. U.S. assistance also includes critical civic and voter education efforts in preparation for the 2014 presidential, parliamentary, and local elections. To promote respect for human rights, USAID focuses particularly on freedom of assembly and speech, and protection of minority and disadvantaged groups, including women, people with disabilities, and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
