As part of its malaria prevention efforts, USAID supports the distribution of bed nets to pregnant women and children through primary health care facilities.

Malaria is the leading cause of disease and death in Mali. USAID activities support the goal of the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) to reduce malaria-related mortality by 70 percent by the end of 2015.

USAID marked its fourth consecutive year of implementing PMI activities in Mali in 2012, achieving important results:

  • 1,509,920 long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, which help prevent malaria, have been distributed
  • 205,066 houses were sprayed for mosquitoes during USAID's 2012 campaign, protecting 762,146 people during the July-September rainy season
  • 1 million malaria rapid diagnostic tests and 2,400,030 courses of malaria treatments were procured and provided to health facilities and community health workers
