Support to the Peace Process

Program Goals

  • Support the emergence of responsive, effective, and inclusive civil authorities.
  • Restore the conditions of peace within and among communities through support of opportunities for peaceful dialogue.
  • Assist in the emergence of an empowered and active civil society.
  • Increase access to quality, independent information.

Program Activities

  • Civil Authorities: Support for civil authorities' development of plans, policies, governing bodies, and procedures needed for southern Sudan's transition from war to peace.
  • Peace Building: Interventions in this area include the provision of technical assistance/capacity building to civil society groups and key sector governance bodies and the implementation of community-identified priority projects to secure local peace agreements among citizens. Additional efforts include peace and civic education initiatives and local and nationally-sponsored dialogues and peace councils.
  • Civil Society: Activities in this area include education and training, organizational development, networking skills, constituent building, and the provision of material support for effective operation. Grants are provided through the South Sudan Transition Initiative to strengthen civil society organizations in the justice sector, support human rights networks, map civil society organizations, and increase women's participation in civil society/governance bodies.
  • Establish Independent Southern Sudan Media: The establishment of independent media in southern Sudan is a key component of USAID intervention. The Education Development Center is being supported to establish a local language radio service for southern Sudan. The Sudan Radio Service's shortwave broadcast is presently providing six hours of daily broadcasts in nine different dialects. Training of Sudanese journalists is also part of this activity as well as part of the support provided to the Sudan Mirror, a Sudanese newspaper.
