Access Restored

The Nuba Mountains had long been isolated from humanitarian assistance and a special target of the government of Sudan. In July 2001, Administrator Natsios began negotiating with the government for increased access. August 30 the first relief flight went to the Nuba Mountains carrying life-saving support. In September 2001, Senator Danforth began negotiating additional food and other support, and a ceasefire that would stop all conflict and allow civilians free movement.
