Humanitarian Assistance

Program Goals

  • Support for the return and reintegration of IDPs and refugees in home areas.
  • Emergency relief food assistance in conflict zones (southern Sudan, Darfur and eastern Chad);
  • Food security linked with conflict prevention to promote success and sustainability of the peace process in areas of conflict.
  • Implementation of rehabilitation and capacity building activities in stable areas with an emphasis on self-reliance, utilization of local resources, capacities, and "ownership."
  • Increase in agricultural production.

Humanitarian Activities:

  • Health and Nutrition: Primary health care activities, including curative care, disease prevention/disease control, expanded program of immunizations, nutrition surveillance and emergency interventions, maternal health, basic community health education programs, and sexually transmitted diseases and associated health risks.
  • Water and Sanitation: Provision of new water and sanitation facilities, the rehabilitation of water sources, general water maintenance activities, community sensitization and involvement with management of water and sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs for sanitation.
  • Food Security/Agriculture/Animal Health: Emergency activities that provide basic inputs, support and strengthen local market systems, build on local capacity, and train communities, such as local seed fairs or seed voucher programs, the provision of basic inputs, and other resources to restart livelihood activities in conflict-affected areas. Support for animal health activities includes training of community animal health workers and disease control.
  • Livelihoods/Community Improvement-Quick Start: Livelihood recovery activities to support or reestablish household-level coping strategies to increase resilience to climatic, economic, and health shocks. Examples of livelihood projects include small grants for discreet community improvement projects, and cash or food for work projects.
  • Relief Commodities: Activities that provide direct assistance to highly vulnerable families through the provision of basic household and hygiene items, targeting those displaced by conflict or having recently returned to their areas of origin.
