Education

Program Goals

  • Improved teacher education programs.
  • Increased capacity of primary and secondary schools to deliver quality education.
  • Improved nonformal education for out-of-school youth and adult learners.

Highlights of Achievements

  • Regional Teacher Training Institute rehabilitated and ready for teacher intake.
  • Education Support Network developed as the new framework for the delivery of services and programs for the Secretariat of Education.
  • 100 primary schools and 3 secondary schools under construction (over 50 completed). Close to 25,000 students are enrolled at USAID-supported schools.
  • 7,078 community members participated in Sudan Basic Education Program sensitization, orientation, and training programs.
  • 57 Sudanese men and women in training to manage Regional Teacher Training Institutes.
  • 946 scholarships provided to female students to promote interest in teaching as a profession.
  • More than 1000 southern government Secretariat of Education officers trained in education planning, administration and financial management.
  • 92 nonformal education teachers trained.
  • 870 students enrolled in adult literacy program.
  • 225 students attending Intensive English Language Course.
  • Delivery of 25,000 library books to southern Sudan and nine librarians trained.
  • 147,000 New Sudan primary textbooks delivered to south Sudan.
  • 13 southern Sudanese nongovernmental organizations trained on basic financial management, organizational development, project management, program reporting, and monitoring and evaluation.
