Formal Education: PIASCY - 2

USAID/Uganda supports President Museveni's Initiative on AIDS Strategy for Communication to Youth (PIASCY) in multiple ways. It provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Education and Sports to develop the PIASCY materials and bring together a broad cross-section of partners including faith-based groups, government, NGOs, educators, and youth organizations.

To kick off the campaign USAID/Uganda participated in a highly-publicized event at a rural primary school. The pilot program was initiated by introducing new textbooks in two districts in Uganda. Ultimately, it will be extended to all 11,000 public schools in the country.

In addition to new textbooks, the program provides extensive tutor training in the 19 coordinating centers and the primary teacher's college. It also works with pre-service tutors, college administrators in primary teachers' colleges, national teachers' colleges, and over 3,800 teachers (out of the 5,100) in the two pilot districts.

USAID also supports the printing and distribution of posters on behavioral change for distribution to the schools as well as the printing of supplementary readers on HIVIAIDS for Ugandan students.

Beyond the schools, USAID has supported talk show programs and skits that are aired over various local FM stations regarding behavioral change amongst the youth.
