Highlighting Past Support, Fore Reaffirms U.S. Commitment to Kosovo

USAID Administrator and Director of Foreign Assistance Henrietta Fore visited Kosovo May 16-17, 2008, meeting with President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, who expressed their deep gratitude for U.S. assistance and political support. Fore also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kosovo Judicial Council pledging $8 million in aid to the courts and judicial system, and witnessed the signing of a Fulbright agreement with the Ministry of Education to send two graduate students to the U.S. for masters level training. She emphasized that USAID has already invested built or renovated 64 schools and school playing fields across Kosovo over the years, an investment of over $6.2 million dollars, and had established, via USAID, a $7 million endowment fund known as the Kosovo American Education Fund, which offers graduate-level scholarships in the United States. Education will continue to be a priority for the U.S. Government, the Administrator said at the signing ceremony, and USAID will make a commitment to this sector at the upcoming Donors’ Conference. Fore spoke with Kosovo Serb NGO representatives, met with Kosovo businesspeople, helped a plant nursery unveil new equipment that will supply farmers with high quality vegetable seedlings, and toured a wood furniture/flooring processor which recently expanded its business.
