TB Program Expands Coverage in Turkmenistan

USAID’s TB program recently expanded to three new towns and five new districts in Turkmenistan’s Balkan Province, and now providing total coverage for the province through pilots. This expansion supports the implementation of the Turkmenistan National TB Program, which envisions nationwide Directly Observed Treatment Short-course strategy (DOTS) implementation by 2009. DOTS is the TB treatment standard recommended by the World Health Organization.

In preparation for this expansion, USAID, together with specialists from Turkmenistan’s State Medical Institute and its National TB Program, trained TB doctors, laboratory specialists, and primary healthcare doctors and nurses in DOTS, and provided microscopes and supplies to local laboratories.

USAID’s TB program, implemented by Project HOPE, currently covers the cities of Ashgabat, Mary, and the Balkan Region.
