Moldova’s Threshold Country Program Announces Implementation Phase

On October 9, 2007, the Threshold Country Program (TCP) held an official ceremony to launch its implementation phase in Moldova. The TCP is a $24.7 million dollar program, funded by the U.S. Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation and managed by USAID. The goal of the TCP is to promote good governance, reduce corruption, and improve public sector service delivery in Moldova.

The event was attended by representatives from the Government of Moldova, international organizations, civil society and mass media. Keynote speakers were First Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, Zinaida Greceanii and the U.S. Ambassador to Moldova, Michael D. Kirby.

“The Government of Moldova must lead the fight against corruption, but it cannot do it alone. Individual citizens, NGOs, and mass media play critical roles in raising awareness, monitoring the performance of government and holding their elected leaders accountable,” stated Ambassador Kirby.

The TCP agreement was signed by the Government of Moldova and the U.S. Government in December 2006 and will be implemented through March, 2009.
