USAID Official Receives Moldovan Medal of Civic Merit
On June 28, President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin presented Brock D. Bierman, Senior Advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Europe and Eurasia, with the Medal of Civic Merit. The ceremony, held at Decoration Hall in The Presidency Building in Chisinau, was attended by Earl Gast, USAID Mission Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, John Starnes, Country Program Officer for USAID/Moldova, Nicolae Chirtoaca, Ambassador Designate to the United States for the Republic of Moldova, and Michael Getto, Resident Country Director for the International Republican Institute.
The decree presented to Mr. Bierman by the President of Moldova acknowledges his efforts as a representative of the U.S. Government and cited his professional contributions to sustaining democratic reforms and for assistance rendered for social and economic development in the Republic of Moldova.

“The energy and dedication showed by Mr. Bierman to both the United States of America and the Republic of Moldova are admirable," said President Voronin. “I commend your efforts.”
Referred to as “one of Moldova’s greatest friends,” by Ambassador Rudolf V. Perina, Charge d’ Affairs for the U.S. Embassy to Moldova, Mr. Bierman first traveled to Chisinau in 1997 while serving as a Rhode Island legislator. During his tenure with USAID, Mr. Bierman successfully advocated for Moldova’s inclusion in the President’s Special Initiative on Trafficking in Persons and has been directly engaged in elections oversight and professional exchange programs for young political leaders.
Accepting the Medal of Civic Merit, Mr. Bierman expressed his deep gratitude and noted that his grandfather had emigrated from Moldova to the U.S. a century earlier to the month, “I know that he would be proud that his grandson had helped to develop friendship between our two homelands.”
In offering congratulations, President Voronin reflected that Mr. Bierman exemplified the core beliefs his Moldovan ancestors stood strongly for – to work tirelessly to help others in need and to make the world a better place for all – and shared his hope that these cherished values would be passed down to the next generation.
