Kazakhstan Initiates Medical Education Reform
The Council of Ministers of Kazakhstan recently approved the Concept on Reforming the Medical Education in Kazakhstan for nationwide implementation, effective in January 2007. The USAID Health Partnerships Program, implemented by the American International Health Alliance, assisted the Ministry of Health in preparing the concept. The reform will help Kazakhstan’s medical sector align its medical education with international standards. It includes adopting a competency-based education system, developing curricula that incorporate evidence-based practice and problem-based learning, and ensuring that medical and nursing students acquire critical practical skills through early exposure to patient care.
Medical education reform is a prerequisite for assuring the quality of medical care. USAID’s Health Partnerships Program has worked to improve medical education in Central Asia for more than five years. To help build regional medical education capacity, the program created a partnership between seven Central Asian medical institutions and the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center. The program also sponsored study tours for two key Kazakh policymakers, to study medical education systems in the United States; the tours resulted in detailed recommendations for Kazakhstan’s medical education reform.
