Washington, DC -- Chicago businessman and philanthropist
Andrew A. Athens was awarded the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) Bureau Citation in a private ceremony
in Washington on Friday. Dr. Kent R. Hill, USAID Assistant
Administrator for Europe and Eurasia, presented the citation
to Mr. Athens, which recognizes his international service
in the areas of human rights and social justice.
Mr. Athens is the President of the World Council of Hellenes.
In this capacity he has traveled overseas extensively to
reach out and assist people in need in many different countries.
Since the mid-1990s he has mobilized private resources in
the United States and elsewhere to assist people in meeting
their economic and health needs in Albania, Armenia, the
Republic of Georgia and Ukraine. In Georgia, for example,
his efforts have resulted in funding a number of medical
clinics that provide health care to poor communities.
“Andrew Athens truly exemplifies American values and
individual commitment to foreign add and volunteerism, said
Dr. Hill after presenting Mr. Athens with the award. “His
selfless dedication to the people around the world gives
this nation reason to be proud.”
The USAID Bureau Citation seeks to recognize volunteerism
in international development. USAID’s goal with this
award is to increase the public’s awareness of individuals
and organizations that are working to further the mission
of USAID in the United States and abroad. Recipients of this
award are recognized for achievements that have contributed
to the realization of USAID’s mission to provide economic,
development and humanitarian assistance around the world.
