Quality of Life
With the fall of Communism, the Czech Government was faced with the difficulty of maintaining services while improving quality and efficiency so costs would be contained.
USAID funded programs focused on the following areas:
- Broadening social services, including the provision of financial assistance to the YMCA for programs such as sports camps, youth exchanges and the training and broadening of a leadership base.
- Improving Health Care, including reduction of leading causes of death-- cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, improvements of the quality of care and management, and promotion of private markets for healthcare funding.
- Delivering Cleaner Energy by offering training and technical assistance in restructuring and privatization; development of private sector energy efficiency services and enhancement of safety at nuclear power plants.
- Restoring the Environment by focusing on a few large projects to have greater impact, focusing on severely damaged regions where assistance could make a difference in the short term, and focus at the local level.
