Transforming Lives
Women on the Road to Economic Freedom
Every day women across Asia and the Near East begin the long road to economic freedom. The road is not easy - especially in countries torn by conflict. Yet women are resilient. They create economic opportunities where none seem to exist. The United States Agency for International Development, Asia and Near East Bureau is delighted to share a short documentary, Transforming Lives: Women on the Road to Economic Freedom. In this film, we will travel part of that road with women in Afghanistan, the Philippines and Lebanon. We will see the challenges they have faced as they rise above the obstacles of society, traditional customs and tough economic climates to work their way out of joblessness and poverty.
In Afghanistan, we feature a large USAID program giving women the skills they need to improve their health and the health of their children. In the Philippines, women are encouraged to form collectives so they can save collectively and borrow as a group. And in Lebanon, we focus on a USAID program that is helping transform the making of preserves from a tradition into a modern and profitable women's enterprise. This documentary highlights successes, but it also alerts audiences to the challenges in building women's skills and business opportunities, especially in high-threat and post-conflict environments.
We hope that you will find the film useful to both share USAID's story and to generate ideas for future programs that support women as they transform their lives and their communities. USAID is honored to have assisted these strong women in their quest for new skills and a means to help support their families.
