Narole Government School

While visiting Muzaffarabad, the group visited Dewan Tent Village where they were able to see Narole Government School up and running in a tent donated by the United States. The Narole Government School was completely destroyed by the earthquake, and 80 students and 4 teachers (including the head teacher) were killed. On November 8, Narole Government School resumed full operations after U.S. Navy Sea Bees cleared rubble and debris from the school's premises and constructed six latrines. Under the overall coordination of the Government of Pakistan, 250 students are now regularly attending the school.

PUR Water Demonstration

The delegation also saw a demonstration of the PUR safe drinking water system. USAID and Proctor and Gamble entered into a public-private alliance ensuring that 250,000 earthquake survivors will have safe drinking water. USAID and Procter & Gamble's first partnership on clean water dates back to 2003, when USAID provided funding for the Safe Drinking Water Alliance. The partnership launched PUR, a new point-of-use water purification product developed by P&G to provide safe water in Ethiopia, Haiti, and Pakistan.

P&G has responded to the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan by providing $270,000 in cash as well as providing a donation of PUR sachets worth to $16,580. The total donation provides enough PUR sachets to produce safe drinking water to more than 50,000 households for three months. USAID will match P&G's contribution to support the purchase of materials, such as buckets and cloths, needed for proper preparation of PUR. While households frequently have these common materials, in the case of this devastating earthquake, many families have lost all of their possessions

Donation of Tarpaulins to Dewan Mushtaq Group

To help combat the coming winter cold, Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes and the CEOs donated on behalf of the United States 40 rolls of tarps to Dewan Mushtaq Group, who is running the Dewan Tent Village. These tarps will be used to winterize tents in the Dewan Tent Village and other tent villages in the area.
