USAID Provides Grants to Support Workers’ Rights, Traffic Safety and Local Newspaper
April 9, 2009USAID has granted funds for three new projects under the Transparency and Accountability Grants program, totaling $149,900. USAID granted $50,000 to the Faculty of Public Health at the American University of Beirut to increase awareness on existing legislation addressing workers’ health and safety issues, in partnership with the Syndicate of Bakery Owners and the Syndicate of Bakery Workers. USAID also supported local organization KunHadi with $50,000 to develop public awareness materials on road safety and driving laws in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities. Finally, USAID provided $49,900 to local English newspaper the Daily Star, to produce a weekly one-page section on topics such as education, environment, health, women’s rights, consumer concerns, protection of minorities, migration and government reform.
