USAID Supports the Ministry of Interior on Elections

Ambassador Michele J. Sison witnessed the signing by USAID/Lebanon Mission Director Denise A. Herbol and Minister of Interior and Municipalities Ziad Baroud a Memorandum of Understanding to support Lebanon’s electoral process on April 14, 2009. USAID will provide $1.7 million in assistance to the Ministry through its partner, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems or IFES. 

The expert assistance from IFES will assist the Ministry to carry out its responsibilities in managing the upcoming national elections. The Ministry is responsible for the registration of voters, certification of candidates, certification of both domestic and international observation missions, as well as the tabulation and announcement of election results.  IFES assisted the ministry in developing the new website for elections (www.elections.gov.lb).  The Minister at the signing ceremony stated that the site since active has already received 4 million visitors to the site, a sign of significant interest in the upcoming elections.
