USAID Constructs New Building for Agricultural Cooperatives in South Lebanon

September 9, 2008

Within the context of the Expanding Economic Opportunities for Victims of War in South Lebanon program, USAID has funded the construction and establishment of a new cooperative building in the southern village of Azour in Jezzine. The building houses all of the cooperative’s agricultural activities, namely a honey and bees wax processing unit, an eggs processing and packing unit, a dairy processing unit, a unit for the distillation of medicinal herbs and flowers, a feed mill, a cold storage room, retail shops, an Internet café as well as administrative offices. The Jezzine Development Cooperative currently comprises more than 215 members.

With funding from the USAID Leahy War Victims’ Fund, the Azour Development Cooperative was established as a unique resource center in response to the overwhelming needs of landmine survivors and victims of war in Lebanon who are compounded by socio-economic instability. The program targets the district of Jizzine in South Lebanon and aims at assisting disadvantaged and disempowered landmine and war survivors and their families in their quest for livelihood, dignity, economic independence and self-determination.
