U.S. GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES PORTAL AND INFORMATION DATABASE FOR THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS REGULATORY AUTHORITY

Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Beirut, Lebanon

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Ms. Denise A. Herbol attended the launching of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA)’s new portal and information database at the Phoenicia Hotel on December 3, 2008.

Established in February 2007, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA)’s primary mission is to establish a regulatory environment that enables a competitive telecommunications market to deliver state-of-the-art services at affordable prices to the broadest spectrum of the Lebanese population.

USAID provided a grant to the TRA for $100,000 to enable it to develop its current website www.tra.gov.lb that serves as a comprehensive bi-lingual information portal on information and communication technology (ICT), targeting the general public as well as ICT professionals. The TRA’s share of the project amounts to $65,320.

This project falls under the USAID-funded Transparency and Accountability Grants (TAG) program, implemented by AMIDEAST. The TAG program encourages the efforts of civic organizations to improve transparency, accountability and good governance in Lebanon. To date, 146 projects in various sectors have been implemented under the TAG program.

USAID has worked in Lebanon since 1951 and implemented development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. With funds from the American people, USAID creates jobs, invests in youth and protects the environment.  USAID’s work reflects the strong friendship between the Lebanese and American people.
