Side-by-side with the Lebanese people, the U.S. Agency for International Development works to improve the lives of the Lebanese people through development projects that foster stability and democracy. This partnership between the people of America and Lebanon dates back to 1951, and continues in strength today. The American people are contributing $67.5 million to USAID’s programs in Lebanon in 2009. USAID invests those funds in a range of areas that Lebanon has identified as priorities including support for increasing democratic pratices and promotion of the rule of law; strengthening civil society within the country; capacity develoment of teacher skills and improved learning environments in public schools; reducing pollution of the Upper Litani River and improving water management; increasing incomes and expanding job creation; and reconstruction of a major bridge to support commercial transportation within the country. HIGHLIGHTED STORYGOL AND USG SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN LEBANON IS A PRIORITYThe Jamil Rawas Secondary School for Boys in Beirut’s Tarik Jdideh area is part of USAID’s ongoing effort to support improvements for Lebanon’s Public Schools. The Jamil Rawas School received a water filtration system for the playground to sterilize and purify drinking water for use by students, along with two tanks to store the clean water. In addition, educational equipment including computers, printers, scanners and an LCD projector were provided. To strengthen the after-school music program, instruments such as guitars and tambourines were provided for use by the music club. Jamil Rawas has approximately 775 students, and is ranked as the largest secondary school in Beirut. This assistance was provided under USAID’s $11.6 million Lebanon Education Assistance for Development (LEAD) program, which covers 313 public schools in all districts of Lebanon. PRESS RELEASES7/16/2010: Haigazian University Students Benefit from U.S. Scholarship SupportOn July 16, 2010 Ambassador Michele J. Sison presented $450,081 to Haigazian University to directly support its student financial aid program. Three hundred and fifty-six (356) Haigazian University students with demonstrable financial need from all over Lebanon will be given scholarships with these U.S. funds, made available through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Without this assistance, these students would not be able to study at Haigazian University. During their visit to Haigazian University’s campus in Beirut, Ambassador Sison and the USAID/ Lebanon Economic Growth Program Officer Mark Wilt spoke with Lebanese students who have received scholarships funded by the United States. read more...7/14/2010: U.S. Supports Renovation and Refurbishment of Lebanon’s Judicial Training Institute On July 14, 2010, the U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michele J. Sison and United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/ Lebanon Economic Growth Program Officer, Mark Wilt attended the opening ceremony of the renovated Judicial Training Institute (JTI) with Minister of Justice Ibrahim Najjar and members of the High Judicial Council.
7/12/2010: U.S. Provides Scholarship Support to 249 Students at the Lebanese American University On July 12, 2010 Ambassador Michele J. Sison presented $1,178,122 to the Lebanese American University (LAU) to support its student financial aid program. Two hundred and forty-nine LAU students with demonstrable financial need from all over Lebanon will be given scholarships with these U.S. funds, made available through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Without this assistance, these students would not be able to study at LAU. During their visit to LAU’s Beirut campus, Ambassador Sison and USAID/Lebanon Mission Director Denise A. Herbol spoke with LAU students who have received scholarships funded by the United States.
